Original contemporary Irish seascape painting in Acrylic.
Inspired by the Wild Atlantic Way and our beautiful Irish coastline
I love the sound of waves crashing on the rocky shore, the taste of salt water spray on my face. I love the screech of seagulls as they whirl and dive. It’s a sound that always brings me back………to our wild Atlantic shore.
This was painted while doing an art course on Sherkin Island. I was staying in a hostel at the very end of the island in a room overlooking the rocky cliff. As I painted, I could hear the roar of the waves crashing on the rocks below the window. I wanted to capture their energy and force so I literally threw the white paint at the canvas to make the splash. The craggy rocks were painted using strong strokes of the palette knife. I could almost feel the salt water spray on my face. The painting stayed like that for many months. Then one day while painting in the studio, I thought “It needs some seagulls to create some drama and a sense of scale” The title came easily then. The seagulls caught unawares by the crashing waves need to “Watch Out!”
